The Prize Winning DARG Drone Laying Queen project was continued in 2016

So queens will be needed for analysis.

We need :

Drone layers

Poor layers

Virgins

Replaced older queens

Around 100 queens were contributed this year and most have already been dissected and the spermathecae sectioned.

A virus analysis of each queen will also be made using the head and thorax.

Analysis of the spermathecae will be made by members over the winter

ROLL OVER

The Neonicotinoid Debate

DARG members take the view that apiculture should be strongly guided by the latest, highest quality and well reviewed research.   There is also opportunity at meetings for informed discussion and exchange of opinion.

On this site are posted some latest, relevant publications.

Whatever the information shown,  it is intended for the furthering of our understanding of a highly complex and socially divisive topic.   Much more information is yet to be revealed as the effects of the EU two year ban are assessed.

LATEST NEWS ON NOSEMA AND QUEEN VIABILITY FROM IBRA

There is reference in the recent press release from IBRA to several recently published papers in IBRA’s recent edition of Journal of Apicultural Research, which  reveal some interesting observations on the two species of Nosema  N.apis and N.ceranae .

The press release can be downloaded here.

There is interesting evidence presented in the referenced papers that suggests N.ceranae  can weaken the egg production of infected queens but as they age egg laying can also increase as a possible response to the loss of seriously infected workers

IBRA Science Director Norman Carreck says: “These two new papers add to our knowledge of this problematic pathogen and how it adversely affects honey bees”.
